The market for container glass recycling has changed significantly in recent years. In response to this, the two family-run companies with a long tradition, Reiling and Schirmbeck, have founded a joint venture in order to be able to act as a supra-regional purchaser of raw glass vis-à-vis the dual systems.

Reiling and Schirmbeck have a total of 15 plants for container glass and flat glass recycling in Germany and neighbouring countries, of which 6 plants currently accept municipal waste glass from dual systems.

Within the scope of the cooperation, Schirmbeck's plants cover the south and southwest, while Reiling's plants cover the west, east and north of Germany. There are no plans to expand the cooperation in flat glass recycling. However, the joint marketing of processed hollow glass cullet to the glass industry is not ruled out at the present time.

By founding a joint company, we want to strengthen our market position in order to be able to survive and grow in the long term in the highly competitive market, says Johann Schirmbeck, owner and managing director of Schirmbeck GmbH.

Marc Uphoff, Managing Director of the glass companies of the Reiling Group, as well as of the newly founded company, adds that Reiling and Schirmbeck are perfect partners for this type of cooperation due to their size, the submarkets that complement each other very well in terms of location, but also due to the ownership structures. Both companies have equal rights and each holds 50% of the shares in the new company.

The cooperation was agreed with the Federal Cartel Office in advance purely as a precautionary measure. Due to the recent changes in the market situation as well as the nationwide logistics requirements of the dual systems, the Federal Cartel Office stated that there were no objections to the cooperation under cartel law.
